Obituary for Jimmy Speers

On Thursday morning, February 25, 2021, Jimmy Dale Speers of Durant, Oklahoma, left this life here on Earth to begin his eternity with the Lord. Jim was born on October 22, 1948, in Durant as the oldest son of James and LaRuth Speers.

Jim attended school at both Silo and Mead and graduated from Mead High School in 1966. In the spring of 1968, he joined the Air Force and served his country in that capacity until l972. Jim attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1975 followed by a Master of Science in Education in 1977. On December 25, 1972, he married Freida Wilcox, and together they had two children, Josiah James and Sarah Lynn.

Jim’s love of knowledge and heart for education led him to begin his career serving students in the public school system where he taught Industrial Arts and Technology in both Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Plano, Texas. It was at this time that Jim went back to further his own education eventually obtaining his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Texas in 1992 and moving on to teach Information Systems in the School of Business at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. In 2015, he retired after 40 years teaching.

Over the course of his 72 years, Jim led several construction-based mission trips to Mexico with First Baptist Church, McKinney. Texas, as well as First Baptist Church, Durant, Oklahoma, and was both a proud and active member of The Gideons for several years. At the age of 50, he learned to play the mandolin, becoming an accomplished player using his talents in a bluegrass band, First and Bourne, with Steve and Jackie Garner.

Jimmy Dale is survived by Freida Wilcox Speers, his son, Josiah Speers and wife, Cynthia, of Flower Mound, Texas; daughter, Sarah Rose and husband, Daron, of Piedmont, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Noah James Rose and Ezrah Jude Rose of Piedmont, Oklahoma; and Asher Phineas Speers and Lucas Tobin Speers of Flower Mound, Texas; and brother, Roger Speers and wife, Kathy, of Denison, Texas.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James and LaRuth Speers of Silo, Oklahoma.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Silo Cemetery in Silo, Oklahoma with Roger Speers officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gideons International in Durant or Missions at Kemp Baptist Church.
