Obituary for Jane Phelps

Jane Phelps passed away peacefully at Kings Daughters and Sons Nursing Home on Sunday, May 8, 2022 with her family around her. She was born in Durant, Oklahoma to Leon and Eleanor (Fry) Phelps on May 9, 1935.

She grew up with two annoying little brothers, Pat and Mike. She graduated Durant High School and attended Southeastern State College before moving to Dallas, where she enjoyed a career in a law office and with real estate property management. She returned to her roots in Durant during her later years to be near family.

While in Dallas, she was active in the Soroptimist Club, and served as President for several terms. Soroptimist Club supports and finances as their philanthropy, summer camps for severely handicapped children, who seldom get to enjoy the experience due to their handicaps. She was a creative seamstress and provided her numerous nieces and nephews, beautifully handmade Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, every hand stitch was made with love. She was a member of a quilting club and made quilts for her relatives and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Michael, and her niece, Leah Phelps White. She leaves behind her brother Pat, and wife, Dot, her nephews, David and wife, Karen, Darryl Phelps, and nieces, Rai Phelps, Kara Phelps Amis and husband, John, Lenzie Phelps Knight and husband, Shane, and Haley Phelps Montanaro, and a host of great nieces and nephews, and one great great niece. Her nephew, David Phelps, was instrumental in helping Jane through retirement investments and helped her transition from home ownership to independent living, then preparing to move to Durant. Without his help, she could not have managed all the transitions.

The family would like to thank the staff at Kings Daughters and Sons Nursing Home, the Elara Care Hospice staff, especially Marquita, DeMichael and Angie, Dr. Chris Sturch and Father Jim Blagg for helping Jane live and die. We also want to thank Brent Gordon and Stacy White for singing Jane into a peace which passes all understanding. We are forever grateful for the blessing of kindnesses.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM, Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Gordon Funeral Home. The family requests in lieu of flowers, to consider a donation to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Durant.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gordon Funeral Home, 221 N. 3rd, Durant, PH- 580-916-9090, www.gordonfh.com
