Obituary for Richard Chastain Thompson

Richard Chastain Thompson, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He passed away on February 3, 2024 while battling cancer and complications from stroke. He was born on April 13, 1946, at his family’s home in Bennington, Oklahoma to L. Chastain and Ellen Lorene Thompson.

Richard lived a fulfilled life with the things that he loved to do. He took great pride in his ranch and his family.

He was a successful auctioneer, cattle buyer, farmer, and rancher. As an auctioneer, he auctioned farm and estate sales around the area and auctioned cattle at many sale barns including Antlers, Idabel, Atoka, Holdenville, and Wichita Falls.

He enjoyed buying cattle and bought over 60,000 head of cattle for various cattlemen. He received many compliments on the quality of cattle that he bought for the buyers and took great pride in the work that he did for customers and as a rancher.

He loved to farm the land and prepare it for crops and the cattle that he owned. He continuously worked hard to build a better Black Angus herd from one year to the next and knew all of his herd by number and calving history.

Richard was a great man of integrity and a man of his word. If he told you that something would be done; it would be done. It was also important for him to teach his kids the importance of integrity, honesty, hard work, and grit through life lessons.

His greatest pride was his family. He enjoyed spending time with them and attending all of their sporting events. He was always interested in what they were doing in school and in life.

The loss of such an incredible man has left an unfillable void in the hearts of those that loved him but we take comfort in knowing that he will live through our memories and the legacy that he left for us.

He was preceded in death by his parents L. Chastain Thompson and Ellen Lorene Thompson of Bennington, Oklahoma, and half-sister Barbara Stump of Washougal, Washington.

Survivors include his loving wife Georgia Ellen Thompson of Bokchito, Oklahoma; his loving children Audra Ellen Vandiver of Little Elm, Texas, and Darrell Richard Thompson of Van Alstyne, Texas; his cherished grandchildren MaKenna Chyanne Thompson of Boswell, Oklahoma, Ian Quinn Vandiver and Mira Olivia Vandiver of Little Elm, Texas, Sloane Gray Thompson and Haven Everly Thompson of Allen, Texas; a great grandchild Karsyn Layne Coker of Boswell, Oklahoma; brothers Orval Thompson of Bennington, Oklahoma, Randal and wife Linda Thompson of Bennington, Oklahoma, David and wife Maxine of Lancaster, Texas, and Kenneth Thompson of Bokchito, Oklahoma; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
